Published in: Newsadvmoto-events-announcement

Efforts to support the entire community of events will become a priority for ADVMoto in 2017 and moving forward. Over the past four years, the number of adventure dual-sport bike rallies has dramatically increased. We understand how important these events are as a sign of industry growth, and it’s our desire to support the community wherever possible. In order to accomplish this, some changes need to be made.

Screenshot6

ADVMotoEvents.com was recently released and allows users to find dual sport and adventure bike related events all over the world. Events are free to submit and users can stay up to date on announcements and promotions through the ADVMotoEvents Facebook page.

Additionally, all event reports will be posted on ADVMotoEvents, and are also free to submit. Utlimately, there is no better place to announce and publish information on your event anywhere in the industry...and entirely for free! The website even features a Touring/Training/Rental company directory to make planning your next vacation or getting training as easy as clicking a button.

ADVMoto Rally will be put on hold. The ADVMoto Rally is extremely special to us and a time where 100% of our effort was spent making sure our awesome readers had a fun, safe and memorable experience. What we put in, we got back ten-fold through the pleasure of hanging out with riders, sharing memories with supporters and many making many new friends along the way.  Much thanks goes out to Wapocoma Campground, the volunteers and die hard ADVMoto lovers who came to every event.

"The decision to put the annual ADVMoto Rally on hold was not easy, but it’s time to shift our focus to efforts that will have a wider impact on the community." says Carl Parker, ADVMoto Publisher. "I like seeing happy people. Those who came to the ADVMoto Rallies know what a special time it was and hope you carry that spirit with you every day. We challenged ourselves, learned new skills and made new stories with new friends. You couldn't ask for anything more."

ADVMoto Rally 13

ADVMoto has new events in store! We're currently developing a unique program which reflects who we are as a company and doesn't directly compete with our partners and clubs in the community. More details will be announced soon.

We know some of you attended the ADVMoto Rally year after year, solely to see our gleaming faces and soak in our moto obsessed ambiance. No worries, we’re still down to ride! In fact, we invite you to join us May 5 th – May 7th at Boyer Farm for the ADVMoto Dust-Off Rally ride. This isn’t a full blown rally and much more minimalist. We’ve reserved the farm just for us to have fun on. With 400 acres of beatuiful West Virginia trails, it's a great place to get your bike dirty after a winter break. It’ll be family friendly, so bring the kids! The entry fee is a cash donation which goes directly to support Boyer Farm and Lost for a Reason. More details on the ADVMoto Dust-Off Rally will be announced soon and registration will also be open on ADVMotoEvents.com.

Last, but not least, ADVMoto will be attending more events and offering more sponsorship options to event holders, so expect to see ADVMoto hanging out, vendoring or supporting an event near you!

Royal Enfield Himalayan gets FI for India

Published in: NewsRoyal Enfield Himalayan

Royal Enfield has recently announced an update to the eagerly anticipated Himalayan model in India. As of April 1, 2017 India will require new emission standard on all motorcycles larger than 125cc. This new regulation forced Royal Enfield to equip it's hot new adventure bike with EFI and, most likely like it's UK released counterpart, ABS as well.

RoyalEnfield Himalayan EFI ABS 2

Although this will certainly drive prices up against stiff domestic compeition from the Bajaj Dominar 400, it will likely be a smart move globally. One can only hope or assume when we see the Himalayan in North America, it will likely be fitted with EFI and ABS as well. Some reports are already claiming the Himalayan is destined for America. Two carburated units have been posted on the Royal Enflied North America's Instagram account, but there hasn't been an official announcement yet.

RoyalEnfield Himalayan EFI ABS 1

As a comfortable 410cc adventure tourer, with retro styling and largely exposed frame, we expect there's plenty of canvas for cut and weld designers to play with. The Royal Enfield Himalayan should do well on American shores as long as introductory prices are competitive and quality or reliability issues are kept to a minimum.

Lots of questions still remain. What would you pay to be an early Himalayan adopter?  Would it compete with Ural, who has seen a steady growth in popularity and sales over the past several years? Let us know below!

Mosko Moto Nomad Sneak Peak

Published in: Newsmosko-moto-nomad-sneak-peak

Mosko Moto luggage has caught on like wildfire in the past few years. Their innovation continues with the new Nomad tank bag which will be available around June of 2017.

ADVMoto got a sneak peak at the Nomad which sports a host of new features not found on many tank bags on the market. As mountain bikers and backcountry skiers, the design crew at Mosko envisioned a tank bag which works more like a technical backpack. This gave rise to a robust organization system, which is designed to not only hold items commonly found in tank bags, but also be sure they stay compressed and dry.

Mosko nomad 4

The expandable beavertail covers a pleathora of pockets for pens, multi tools, even a custom sized Delorme PLB pocket. It’s expandable so works great for storing your camera in a very accessible location and attached to compression straps which make sure your load is snug and rattle free.

The outer shape was designed to work primarily as tank bag, but also doubles as a great small hiking/day pack. Whether you’re doing a hike from your bike while on a BDR, or walking in a market in Mexico, having the ability to turn it into a pack is very convenient. The Nomad quickly detaches from the bike. Underneath you will find the mesh backpack straps that deploy, and connect to the blue D-rings. The aft-mounting straps turn into the waist straps.

Another feature Mosko Moto wanted to push was hydration. The Platypus hydration bladder is included with every Nomad. They are firm believers that water should not be worn on your back. “The riding jackets we have to wear are heavy enough! So we made a hydration pocket in the lowest level, up against the gas tank.” says Andrew Bryden of Mosko Moto. The hose routes out a small zipper and up over the side so it is easily accessible while seated.

Mosko nomad 5

If you choose not to use this pocket for hydration, it could also make a great concealed-carry pocket.

Last but not least, the Nomad features the MOLLE attachment system. On this bag it has been placed on the beaver tail and means that you can add the included map pocket, knife, first-aid or anything with MOLLE webbing on it.

MSRP is still unknown at this point but we look forward to getting our hands on one for testing. We suspect this bag will not only be a good option to ADV/dual-sporting, but commuting and everyday outdoor activities as well.

Stay posted to ADVMoto for more news and review on the Mosko Moto Nomad. In the meantime, check out their website at MoskoMoto.com!

To compete in the mid-sized twin category, BMW is forced to revise their F800GS with better performance, more comfort, and sophisticated electronics. UK based motorcycle publication, MoreBikes, has scored spy shots of BMW’s latest mid-sized adventure bike, the 2018 F900GS.

BMW F900 GS 001 2 copy

The photos show numerous changes over the F800GS, including left side final drive, right side exhaust, and revised bodywork. A thinner frame and engine layout help achieve a narrow profile, a major plus for off road riding and shorter riders. The wheels also seem to be swapped for a tubeless design.

We're still waiting for specs and will post updates as we receive them. Is this bike enough to compete with Honda’s Africa Twin and KTM’s new 1090 Adventure R? Let us know what you think about the F900GS in the comment below!

Bajarallymoto.com reports that one of Baja CA's original off road racing heroes and Motogear.mx owner, Beto Verber has announced his entry into BAJA RALLY 2017 with a media supported project backed by Dirt Bike Magazine and MotoNation, North American importer of SIDI Boots. Behind the scenes of the Mexican racer's initiative are team manager Bill Berroth (MotoNation) and Dirt Bike Editor Tom Web.

beto verber 2

"I did pretty well as a rookie last year and had a great time learning the ropes", explains Verber, " I kept telling Bill (Berroth) and Tom (Web) about the difference of BAJA RALLY, so they hatched the plan for a big group effort in 2017. It takes a small army to do this and we have built the troops."

Verber's transition into the sport of rally-raid came last year after 3 decades of traditional off road racing from age 11 including SCORE Championships on Kawasaki Team Green from 1990-96. He's raced all that Baja CA has ever had to offer and his pedigree and resume have earned him a respectful following of racers and fans.

Verber's 2017 plans include the buildout of a KTM EXC 350 with massive support from as many as 10 different companies all pitching in to help Verber make a bike that can go the entire distance in the BAJA RALLY, now in its 5th year.

Joining Dirt Bike Magazine & Sidi Boots are:

PRECISION CONCEPTS - Suspension & Prep

MOTION PRO - Cables & Tools

MAXIMA RACING OILS - Lubricants

MAXXIS TIRES

NITRO MOUSSES

100% GOGGLES - Eyewear

RYNO POWER - Sports Nutrition

SUPER SPROX - Sprockets

IMS PRODUCTS - Fuel Tanks and Foot Pegs

CYCRA RACING - Hand Guards & Accessories

BAJA RALLY Chairman Scotty "Breauxman" Bloom said over 90% of the this year's entrants are veteran racers who have already raced this rally previously and that Verber's return to the 2017 edition reinforces BAJA RALLY's effort to focus attention & resources on safety & overall "rider experience".

"Beto's rally debut in 2016 left a great impression on both him and us. He's been a huge supporter ever since, recruiting racers from within his tight circle", explains BAJA RALLY Chairman Scotty "Breauxman" Bloom, "Now that he's building a solid team lead by Bill & Tom, it lends everyone the exposure and energy needed to keep true to our event's mission to safety promote this sport while helping the people and communities in the state of Baja CA."

With the new MC 360™ the METZELER brand went further, creating a product that makes versatility its watchword as this tire has been developed for use in various off-road disciplines that include motocross, supercross, cross country and freestyle. With the new MC 360™, the Research and Development team of Metzeler have managed to condense all the needs of these disciplines into two specifications, Mid-Soft and Mid- Hard. The different specifications allow for each to be able to better react to the prevailing feature of the mixed tracks whilst ensuring consistent and long life performance.

The name chosen for this product is not random: the number 360 emphasizes the all-around abilities of this tire in any conditions of soil and climate, all combined with an excellent level of grip. The new MC 360™ has been developed to ensure maximum performance from soft soils and sand, up to abrasive, rocky surfaces. It’s designed to withstand every sort of mixed terrain found in the course of a lengthy cross country track.

This versatility of use has been made possible thanks to the development of two innovative tread patterns for mid-soft and mid-hard which guarantee, respectively, an unprecedented traction on soft ground and also resistance to tearing on hard surfaces.

MC360 4

All sizes of the new product will be reversible, which ultimately means they can be used in both directions of rotation: so when the knobs are worn the rider can reverse the direction of rotation of the tire, giving double tire life. Another very important feature, and undoubtedly one that will be much appreciated by lovers of trail and enduro, you can leave from your home on the bike to reach the circuit as the new MC 360™ tires are homologated for road use.

Before being available on the market, starting from spring 2017 (subject to sizes), the Testing Department of METZELER has subjected the new MC 360™ to extreme tests in the most diverse and challenging situations. These will culminate with a final test phase in late February when some prototypes tires will be used in the Atacama desert and in the ascent of Nevado Ojos del Salado, a volcano located between Argentina and Chile. At a height of 6,891 meters above sea level it is the highest volcano in the world. The activity will allow the test team to test the product in difficult conditions not only in terms of terrain, but also with regard to varied weather conditions. The range of all the available sizes, as well as complete technical specifications of the product, will be announced in the spring when the new MC 360™ will begin to be marketed. METZELER.com

On a long-distance motorcycle adventure the rider faces a lot of changes in terrain, weather and circumstance. Whatever the situation, the rider wants to be as prepared as possible and the optimum footwear is paramount. That’s why Touratech developed the Destino Adventure Boot. It’s a riding boot designed to excel on pavement, over distance, through dirt, mud and water. The Destino also has a feature that no other boot has: A waterproof inner shoe engineered to wear separately.

With Destino, a day in the saddle doesn’t have to end with wet socks or walking through camp or a restaurant in big, heavy boots. No longer do you need to carry an extra pair of shoes for off-the-bike excursions. The shoes are integrated into the riding boots and the outer-boot can lock right to your bike if you need to leave them behind while you socialize or explore. “This is easily the most versatile boot on the market for adventure riders.”- Paul Guillien, Backcountry Discovery Routes

Chris Birch Goes Big Bike Racing

A simple YouTube search is enough to convince anyone that Chris Birch can ride the wheels off KTM’s big adventure bikes. This year, the Austrian company brings its latest 1090 Adventure R to the market, the same bike Birch plans to compete with at the Hellas Rally in Greece. Afterwards, he’ll enter the Iron Class at Red Bull Romanics in Romania where he'll put the 1090R to the ultimate test.

Romaniacs separates the riders into classes - Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron. Each class takes a different route, and although the Iron competitors race on the the "easiest" course, the route is designed for enduros, not adventure bikes.

Gal1

Birch is used to piloting a KTM 300 2-stroke enduro to compete in the event, a bike that weighs 236lbs less than the 1090R. However, extensive Trials training and a lifetime of competition allow Birch to navigate the big v-twin through terrain some of us wouldn’t dare take our trail bikes.

Birch wasn't the only one thinking big, as former BMW factory rider Gerhard Foster plans to ride a Touratech prepped BMW R nine-T prototype. Both bikes will be highly modified to withstand the grueling punishment of "The World's Toughest Hard Enduro".

The event kicks off July 25th - July 29th. Keep up-to-date on all the action at RedBullRomaniacs.com/Live

STS Universal Self Cancelling Turn Signals

Published in: Newssts-self-cancelling-turn-signals

Two million crashes happen every year in the USA due to the misuse of turn signals. Although motorcycle riders represent a small group of this statistic, 40 % of all riders endanger themselves and others by forgetting to cancel their signals.

In an automobile, every time a driver rotates the steering wheel back into its original position, the turn signal is canceled. Now this kind of solution is also available for motorcycles. Smart Turn System (STS) is a self-cancelling turn signal solution for all motorcycles.

8

STS is an add-on device for bikes that uses motion sensor technology, to determine the precise time to cancel turn signal. This precise time is right after the rider has completed the maneuver - completed right or left turn, changed lanes or even exited a roundabout. In addition to using sensor technology, the device uses a complex algorithm, which processes 300 data in one second. The four most important data that algorithm collects and processes are:

  • Vibration - engine rotation frequency (rpm), road surface, rider’s movement, acceleration, and deceleration all influence the cumulative vehicle vibration.
  • Acceleration - change of velocity in time provides a great deal of information needed to detect the rider’s intentions and consequently information about the occurring maneuver.
  • Inclinations - center of mass of the rider and the motorcycle must lean in the direction of the turn and brief counter steer causes that lean by removing support directly under the center of gravity.
  • Heading - once motorcycle is leaned and steering wheel is turned motorcycle starts changing the direction and position in space.

The development of STS device took almost two years, installed on more than 200 motorcycles, and took over 100 hours of practical tests in various traffic situations. "It was all worth it in the end," says Company Founder, Miha Kovac. The device can also detect if the rider is standing at a junction, ensuring the signals don't cancel early. It can detect if the rider is only weaving, and not cancel until he/she actually makes the correct maneuver.

7

Most similar devices on the market use timers or traveled distance for cancelling turn signals. The most advance systems are made by Harley Davidson and Honda. However, some of these devices have problems at lower speeds, changing of lanes and roundabouts. STS does not have those problems, since it works with different parameters. It does what it should do, exactly when it should do.

The STS device is compatible with all brands of bikes, except newer BMWs and Ducati models, which have LIN communication on the handlebar switch. The device is also patented and certified, so it will not damage the bike. The system can be removed easily and re-installed onto another bike. STS is innovation that can save your life. It works flawlessly and riders will never miss-indicate again. Installation is easy and anyone with little knowledge of their motorcycle can install it at home. MSRP: 149.00 EU Safer-Turn.com

What customers are saying:

- James G.Y., satisfied customer: “Fitted your system to my Triumph Sprint GT. It is working perfectly! Every bike should have one of these. Every rider should want one. Thank you so much for such a great product.”

- Tony M., FB post: "Bought one of these for my Triumph Sprint ST 955i, works a treat. I'm a devil for leaving my turn signal on, this little gizmo will greatly add to the safety of my rides. The STS team answered my questions promptly and professionally making the whole experience a pleasure - many thanks guys."

MOVALYSE is a Slovenian start-up company founded in 2014 by Miha Kovač and Rok Upelj and its goal is to bring motorcycle automation to the next level. Team of experts in the field of mechanics and electronics is determined to improve motorcycle safety one device at the time. The company has currently over 2000 Smart Turn System users and the numbers keep growing every day.

CSC's Announces New Lightweight Motorcycle - The RXR

Published in: Newscsc-rxr-motorcycle-release

CSC Motorcycles announced their new RXR motorcycle this week, a no-frills variant of their iconic RX3 adventure touring motorcycle. The new RXR has the same powertrain, chassis, seat, wheels, and bodywork as the RX3, but it does not include luggage, top case, rear rack, engine and rear frame guards, body panel decals, passenger footpegs, and front fork panels. The RXR is more than 50 lbs lighter than the RX3 motorcycle. The RXR includes a cut-down windscreen and a blacked-out muffler heat shield.

"Our customers asked for a version of the RX3 that eliminated all of the touring equipment but kept the same proven RX3 power train," said Steve Seidner, President and CEO of CSC Motorcycles. "The RXR includes the RX3's 250cc liquid-cooled, fuel injected, 4-valve engine and 6-speed transmission but takes away all of the touring equipment. It's substantially lighter than the RX3 and the resulting performance improvement is impressive. The RXR is a great canyon carver and commuter. It's an all-around fun motorcycle."

CSCRXR 1

"People in the industry tell us we rekindled the interest in small-displacement adventure bikes," Seidner said. "The success of our RX3 has attracted some of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturers to offer bikes in our displacement category. We noticed the recently-announced slate of small bikes from the other guys doesn't have any of the accessories that are standard on the RX3 and we wanted to level the price comparison playing field. Even with all of the RX3's accessories we're still priced well below the competition, but we wanted to give riders a comparable 'bare bones' motorcycle option for an apples-to-apples comparison. Our no-frills RXR is as much as $2000 lower than the other Johnny-come-lately bikes entering the mix. We also wanted a bike with a 'street fighter' look, and we think we've succeeded."

CSCRXR 3"The RXR can be easily configured with the RX3's luggage and other adventure touring features for buyers wishing to take their motorcycles on extended tours," Seidner said. "We can also configure the RXR with our Wolfman line of soft luggage, a popular option with many riders." Seidner explained that purchasers of CSC's iconic 250cc motorcycles can also participate in the company's annual 2000-mile Baja expeditions. The CSC Baja tours include whale watching, a visit to Baja's prehistoric cave paintings, and some of the best and most scenic riding on the planet, all at no charge to participants (other than personal expenses).

CSC offers a free service manual with each of their motorcycles, and an extensive collection of maintenance tutorials on their website. The RXR is available in blue, pearlescent white, orange, and silver, and it includes a 2-year, unlimited mileage warranty (the first year includes parts and labor, the second year includes parts only). MSRP: $3495 CSCMotorcycle.com
