The BAJA RALLY Training Academy Completed Its First Assembly In A “Storm” Of Praise

The BAJA RALLY TRAINING ACADEMY is a comprehensive immersion into motorcycle and UTV rally racing using road book navigation based on the identical criteria used in the world-famous DAKAR RALLY and other FIM World Championship cross country rallies. Designed and instructed by BAJA RALLY creator Scotty “Breauxman” Bloom with special guest instructors, the purpose of the program is to prepare racers for rally raid competitions and building on the skills of existing racers.

Inclement weather aside, the BAJA RALLY Training Academy’s inaugural session ended on February 19th a huge success! Bonding began among instructors and students over Rally Comps & roll charts while they dove into their classroom lessons at the San Nicolas Hotel & Casino in Ensenada, Baja. Day two began the hands-on rally raid simulation. Everyone geared up and mounted their rally-equipped motorbikes to take on the trails and newfound knowledge in navigation. Guides gave distance to the eager and independent riders while they tried to master the underrated challenge of reading a roll chart, piloting their machine and managing their energy, hunger and concentration... Rally Raid!

To add to the fun, Baja weather took a turn for the torrential as downpours, flash floods and cake-batter mud threatened to end the ride before it started. Sleeping under the stars had a different tone with the dreary atmosphere and hopes for blue skies the next day faded with the sunrise. It was another round of slip ‘n sliding and pushing limits as far to the edge as the rally scholars could handle. But perseverance, and a little prodding from the instructors, kept the show on the road, and to no surprise, all the students graduated on Sunday tired, dirty and smiling. We wouldn’t be surprised if we see some of those faces at the starting line of the 5th Annual BAJA RALLY race this October...

Four female riders have been chosen to represent the REV’IT! brand in the 2017 as its first-ever all-female ADV team, following an exhaustive search that pulled candidates from across the country.

Finalists from over a hundred applications were chosen based on their combination of passion, leadership, riding ability, and sheer grit. The team’s collective riding resume encompasses tens thousands of miles over more than a dozen countries through multiple terrains, and each member is an embodiment of the “ADV” spirit.

The REV’IT! Women’s ADV Team will play an essential role in field testing current and upcoming women’s ADV gear, both in everyday rides and at a series of off-road appearances and events in 2017. At the end of the season, these women will have the opportunity to meet in-person with the REV’IT! team of designers in New York City to give first-hand feedback and recommendations.

@millieonthemove learned to ride in 2008 on a 1974 Honda CB550 barn rescue, and has since owned and ridden every two-wheeled iteration from a scooter to a Suzuki Bandit. She discovered a love for the ADV community in late 2013, hooked since her first go onto dirt roads and trails, and has since become a regular fixture at ADV and Dual Sport events and off-road trainings all along the East Coast. Amelia currently rides a Husaberg 390 and is based out of New Jersey.

@She_Braaps started riding adventure and dual sport bikes at the age of 18, and just six short years later she boasts an impressive race resume, having participated in the Southern Off-road Racing Championship Series (Harescramble ) and the NASA RallyMoto Series. Marisa is a certified MSF Rider Coach and recently began instructing off-road riding clinics, specializing in women's training. In her free time, she co-manages a website called MotoDuoAdventures.com and is a regular contributor to ADVMoto and Revzilla's Common Tread blog. She currently lives in Tennessee and rides a KTM 950 Adventure.

@agirlonamotorbike began her riding career with an 8,200-mile trip to Alaska, and in the several years since has cultivated her passion by sharing her adventures in riding, camping, and exploring. She is currently the training coordinator for the Colorado GS Girls, and in 2016 she joined Mountain Moto as a coach. An avid hiker, rock climber, and trapeze artist, Louise chronicles her stories on her blog, Girl on a Motor Bike. Louise currently rides a BMW F700GS in her home state of Colorado.

@bmwmotorcyclegirl began riding at the early age of eight, and her motorcycle adventures have since taken her through the same number of countries: From Arizona through Baja all on to the Guatemalan border; over the Alps in Austria and Slovenia; through the great Pyrenees of France and Spain; and along the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Erika currently rides Betty, a bumblebee-yellow BMW F650 GS, and lives in Arizona.

Touratech has a long history of testing new products in rallye and racing environments. The company uses the rigors of the racecourse to get feedback on designs and to test new products in the harshest conditions. Last year, the company entered a Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin in the Hellas Rallye and its engineers set out to create protection items that would keep the bike alive as it battled a field of bikes half its weight across the rugged Greek countryside.

Using a new deep-draw manufacturing process, Touratech was able to create a skid plate that wraps around the engine featuring a 3-D shape that is pressed from a single sheet of 4mm aluminum. This process strain-hardens the material for increased toughness and the large-radius bends add structural integrity. With no sharp-corners to snag or get hung up on obstacles, the RallyeForm skid plate will glide over rough terrain making a smooth experience for both bike and rider. This design also eliminates the need for welds, a common area where cracks can appear.

The RallyeForm skid plate is available in anodized black and bare aluminum finishes. For the Africa Twin the company has two sizes; the Standard size works with DCT or standard bikes with crash bars installed while the larger Extreme version for manual transmission bikes has increased coverage area eliminating the need for lower crash bars.

European publication www.moto.it reports Honda has revealed specifications and pricing for a new version of the CRF1000 - the Africa Twin Rally. The bike receives a host of upgrades that shave about 15.4 lbs, and boosts power output to 98hp.

The model is a joint development project with RedMoto and not likely to see North American shores. Revised bodywork includes a high front fender, rally tower and windscreen, skid plate, tail tidy, and carbon fiber accents. The images provided by www.moto.it shows anodized triple trees, upgraded wheels with aggressive tires, and what appears to be a factory dress-up kit for the engine. A full Termignoni exhaust system is also displayed in the photos. Of course, these may all be factory options to dress up the Africa Twin Rally for display purposes, as it was showcased at 2017 Roman Motodays.

Pricing has also been announced and fortunately, Honda will offer both the standard (21,490 Euro) and DCT (22,640 Euro) versions of this bike. There has been no announcement for USA distribution, so we’ll have to sit back, cross our fingers, and wait for the press release from Honda. Ten weeks after the Dakar Rally, Monster Energy Honda Team returns to face the 2017 season due to culminate with the Dakar 2018.

The Monster Energy Honda Team, almost in its entirety, will kick off the 2017 campaign next week with the same strategy used last season: while one part of the team is in action in Mexico, the other riders will be simultaneously competing in the World Championship in the Middle East.

Monster Energy Honda Team’s American rider Ricky Brabec is poised to participate in the Sonora Rally in México, a four-day event where riders will have to tackle nearly 1000 kilometres of racing. The Californian currently leads the American Hare & Hound competition after having completed the event’s first two rounds. Brabec, the current champion, will face the Sonora well-armed with the Honda CRF450 RALLY and accompanying roadbook. The race gets underway from Puerto Peñasco on Tuesday 21st March.

Team-mate Joan Barreda was also scheduled to line up for the event, but the Spaniard was injured while training before the race, requiring surgery to his right collarbone and will now miss the action. Barreda should be back in competition in less than a month.

Benavides and Gonçalves in Abu Dhabi

Argentine Kevin Benavides is all set to start the season. The rider from Salta had an accident in Chile a fortnight before the 2017 Dakar Rally and missed the event. The promising rider underwent an operation involving the internal fixation of various right-hand fractures (osteosynthesis) and Kirchner wires. After two months recovering in a cast, Kevin began rehabilitation and physiotherapy in an attempt to regain full movement of the joints. Early in March, Benavides was back in the saddle of the Honda CRF450 RALLY and back in training for what will be his first shot at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, which takes place from 1st to 7th of April.

Alongside Kevin Benavides in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will be Portuguese rider Paulo Gonçalves – sixth place overall finisher in the Dakar 2017 – who will also participate in each round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. The Portuguese rider claimed the title of the 2013 edition of the World Championship, finished runner-up in 2014 and took the bronze medal in 2015.

It is time for the Monster Energy Honda team to get back into racing after the Dakar 2017. We are very sorry about Joan Barreda’s injury and we all wish him a quick and easy recovery in order to be back on the bike soon.

The Sonora Rally in Mexico will be quite important to continue our program of testing and the heavy sand and dunes of the course will be quite demanding and interesting for all participants. I would like to thank Johnny Campbell,JCR Racing and American Honda for their logistic support during the Sonora Rally and also over the forthcoming testing program that we will be following in the US.

In a couple of week’s time we will also start the first race of the FIM World Championship Cross Country Rally, where we can see Kevin Benavides and Paulo Gonçalves in action. For Kevin this will be the first race back after the injury, an important test to check the state of his hand. For Paulo, the Cross Country Rally races are always interesting and it’s useful too in order to maintain the level of fitness of the competitors.
