spidi-globetracker-release

Globetracker is the latest evolution of SPIDI’s world famous adventure touring collection. This EN13595-1 certified waterproof jacket will be your best companion in all the weather conditions and at any latitude. SPIDI tested this garment from Iceland to the Sahara desert with outstanding results. It has been designed by SPIDI Safety Lab with the aim to raise the standards of ergonomics, comfort and safety in long-distance touring and raids in extreme conditions and introduces for the first time in the motorcycle market new innovative technologies such the Dermizax® membrane by Toray.

This particular molecular control membrane is directly coupled to the outer fabric, ensuring impermeability at 100%, extremely rapid breathability and minimum levels of condensation; this is of vital importance when travelling the world looking for the perfect road, crossing borders and continents and facing the elements.

At the same time Globetracker features large air vents on the chest, arms and back, enriched by waterproof and resealable closures, so to ensure a great and even air flow and a water tight barrier during storms. The outer fabric in Cebonner® allows an exceptional fit, thanks to the elasticity on the two axes and the highest levels of abrasion resistance.

8

Moreover, Globetracker sets new safety standards being entirely EN13595-1 certified; this means the whole jacket withstood the toughest abrasion, tearing and impact test simulations according to the CE standards. There is no better proof of Globetracker’s quality. To reach this result, Globetracker features triple stitchings on the impact areas, SPIDI’s state of the art fabrics, an innovative design that works as a frame, plus a full kit of EN1621-1 certified Forcetech protectors.

For active safety the jacket has 3M Scotchlite® reflective inserts around 360°s, and a high visibility color option is available. To extend the riding experience to the cold season, on the inside there is a 150gr removable thermal down jacket that can be worn separately, while the jacket is lined with CoolMax material to promote breathability.

Among the main features of Globetracker jacket there are:

  • High tenacity Extra Tenax triple twisted Nylon 6.6

ENSENADA BAJA CA MEXICO- The 3rd session of BAJA RALLY SCHOOL commenced this past weekend and 6 new graduates passed their final exam stage earning certificates signed by off road Godfather & BAJA RALLY Chairman Emeritus, Nico Saad. This brings the total number of certified BRS graduates to 14 for 2017.

And the graduates are raving about their experience:

8
Noted Mexican pro racer Beto Verber attended last weeks BRS session in preparation for his second BAJA RALLY attempt this October and gave high marks for the training center and support staff.

“Everything I learned with Scotty gives me an extra edge in my next race and it was a lot more challenging than I expected,” explains Verber whose 2017 BAJA RALLY effort is backed by SIDI Boots, Dirt Bike Magazine among many others, “You can never learn enough about racing and rally navigation is pretty new for me. The support crew and food were the best and they took great care of us."

Nomadic adventure rider Daniel Fraser, who quit his job in Pensylvania last year to ride the world, overcame a series of obstacles to finally reach BAJA RALLY SCHOOL and was inspired and aided by the iconic Lyndon Poskitt to finally make it to the graduation ceremony.

"I had such a phenomenal time. It’s a high quality, unique and well thought out rally training event”, Fraser recounted, “From the oceanfront base camp, riding on the beach to mountain-side single track and off-piste in the fields, everything was on point. The road books were spot on with a well paced learning curve and the final ceremony was a real nice touch."

11

The BAJA RALLY SCHOOL is a 3-day training academy designed and directed by BAJA RALLY founder and chairman Scotty "Breauxman Bloom" who partnered with RALLY COMP inventor Mike Johnson to introduce more racers into the sport of road book navigation rally.

Learning how to use Johnson’s RALLY COMP metering device, which is being used in the 3 most important rallies in North America (Sonora, Coast 2 Coast and Baja), is a major part of the BRS curriculum.

Students are required to pass a written exam on the device as well as complete a 12 KM practice stage designed for RALLY COMP before they are allowed to continue to the next 4 successive training stages in the progressive program.

6

Bloom credits Johnson’s RALLY COMP hosts Nico Saad and Federico Arce for the early success and bright future of the program.

“We know we have created the best training program of this type in the world. But that wasn’t our cause”, Bloom explained, “Its just the effect of wanting to do the best thing possible for our trainees and utilizing our relationships and resources for the betterment of everyone involved. This is much more about quality than it is about quantity and it’s a real treat to hear our graduates and hosts singing these praises.”

The classes have been selling out to a maximum of 5 students per session but there are 2 open spots for the June 9-11 course by way of recent cancellations. Rider’s hoping to complete this training before the 2017 BAJA RALLY are unlikely to have another opportunity until late fall.

The tuition includes all of the following:

  • RALLY COMP device & accessories
  • SPOT device & tracking service during training stages
  • Road books for 5 training stages totaling over 180km
  • 6 hours of classroom sessions
  • 30 pages of workbook study materials
  • 1 night stay at San Nicolas Hotel & Casino
  • 7 catered meals including VIP lunch hosted by Nico Saad
  • 2 nights bivouac camping
  • Transport of gear bags between bivouacs

Honda Issues Statement of Condolence on the Loss of Nicky Hayden

honda-nicky-hayden

It is with profound sadness that American Honda marks the passing of longtime Honda racer Nicky Hayden, following a bicycle accident in Italy last Wednesday, May 17.

Born to Earl and Rose Hayden in what would be his lifelong hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky, on July 30, 1981, Hayden was the middle sibling to Tommy, Jenny, Roger and Kathleen. The family was a fixture on the amateur flat track scene, and the brothers eventually also took up club road racing in the early '90s, racing Honda RS125s with support and guidance from Moto Liberty. One year after turning pro, Nicky signed with American Honda in 1999 to race multiple AMA classes for Kevin Erion's Erion Racing satellite squad. By the end of a season-long title battle with Tommy, "The Kentucky Kid" earned the AMA Supersport crown, was named AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year, and was promoted to Honda's factory effort to begin campaigning the premier AMA Superbike division.

112 hayden history 68

In 2002, Nicky took the Daytona 200 victory on his way to becoming the youngest-ever AMA Superbike Champion. The same year, he rode privateer Honda machinery in a part-time effort in the AMA Grand National Championship series, making history when he, Tommy, and Roger finished 1-2-3 at the Springfield TT, becoming the only brothers in AMA Pro history to sweep a professional podium.

HRC signed Nicky to the factory Repsol Honda MotoGP squad for 2003, and the 2005 season saw him score an emotional debut victory at Laguna Seca, his home round. The following season, Hayden picked up a victory at Assen and repeated at Laguna Seca before securing the World Championship at the dramatic finale in Valencia, Spain. Nicky stayed with Repsol Honda for two more seasons and then switched to the factory Ducati team, where he rode for a total of five years before returning to Honda in 2014, this time with the Aspar satellite squad aboard "open"-specification machinery. Last year, Nicky transferred to the World Superbike series with the Ten Kate-run Red Bull Honda team, for whom he won a race in Malaysia and also contested the first five rounds of this season.

Nicky Hayden 2016 Phillip Island 1

Throughout it all, Nicky has remained extremely close to his family. His signature No. 69 was actually on loan from his father Earl, and his parents and siblings could regularly be spotted at his events. One year ago, he was engaged to longtime girlfriend Jacqueline Marin.

Nicky has been a beloved part of the American Honda family since his early AMA days. We have celebrated his many successes together, and enjoyed his occasional visits to the office and Honda pits at a variety of U.S. racing events. This loss is truly the loss of one of our own, and will be felt forever.

Our thoughts are with Nicky's family, friends, team, competitors, and many, many fans during this difficult time.

Following are reflections from some of the people who worked with Nicky through American Honda:

"I was working on the Haydens' bikes when they came to Moto Liberty, and that's kind of when I got my start helping younger riders. Most of the kids that I've helped since then, I've used Nicky as the baseline because of his dedication, focus, and drive. To this day, I always ask the kids, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' They all say, 'professional racer,' so I open my wallet and say, 'Congratulations, here's 5 bucks to ride today, you've achieved your goal.' Then I say, 'You know what Nicky Hayden said when I asked him that question at your age? He said he wanted to be a multi-time world champion.' I think that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about him."

--Danny Walker supported the Hayden brothers' early amateur racing efforts through Moto Liberty. Since then he has worked with many top American racers and today runs American Supercamp riding school and Broaster Chicken RoadRace Factory, American Honda's effort in the MotoAmerica series.

Nicky Hayden 2002 AMA Superbike 2

"Earl used to bug me at the races, saying I should hire his kids, and then one day my parts man, Brian Uchida, came into my office and laid down an article on the Hayden boys. I read it and said, 'Have you seen them?' He said, 'No, but I know people who have, and you need to hire Nicky.' And so I did, even though I didn't know anything except that the Haydens were nice people. He has to be one of the best riders I've ever worked with. He'd ask me from time to time if he was doing okay, and he would thank me just bout every time I saw him. I still get a card from that family every Christmas, and I've been retired for 16 years."

--Gary Mathers was Motorcycle Sports Racing Manager when Nicky signed with American Honda in 1999. He retired in 2001.

******

Nicky Hayden 2005 Laguna Seca MotoGP"The Hayden family has always been so impressive—both the parents and the kids—just really good for racing and the industry. He had so much respect for racing. After he won the AMA Supersport title, we asked him to concentrate on Superbike, and he said, 'Isn't there a responsibility to wear the No. 1?' A lot of riders are the opposite—'Do I have to ride the 600?'—but Nicky was thinking beyond the average racer. Ever since he left here for MotoGP, we've always looked for Nicky in the results. I understand he was immediately very popular at HRC for his effort and humility, and he quickly became a part of the international Honda family. His Laguna Seca wins and the World Championship were so special. There's a really strong feeling for the Haydens and Nicky at American Honda because he's been such a good person for this company."

--Brian Uchida was the Haydens' first point of contact at American Honda when they ordered parts for their club-racing RS125s. Uchida also worked in various capacities for Nicky's AMA race teams and is still employed at American Honda, in the motorcycle accessory department.

*****

"I guess you always know when you've got somebody with a something a little bit more than is normal, and we realized right away with Nicky that there was something special going on. He was super-easy to work with, very enjoyable, never demanding, and very appreciative. I've enjoyed continuing to follow his career ever since."

--Kevin Erion runs Erion Racing, for whom Nicky raced in 1999. Erion still assists American Honda on a number of projects.

******

"The whole Honda family and Hayden family pretty much grew up together, so this is a crushing blow for all of us. Nicky was always the perfect one to have on the team. One time after he came into the official team, he'd had a bad day at the track, and I went over to him and said, 'Hey, don't feel so bad. There's always tomorrow.' He turned to me and said, 'No. I've got to feel this way. That's what's going to make me a champion. I've always got to do my best.' Even with me trying to lift the burden off of him, he kept putting it back on himself, and I think that's just who he was."

--Ray Blank was the Vice President of American Honda during Nicky's AMA career. He retired in 2012.

Nicky Hayden World Superbike 1

"From the very beginning, we knew Nicky was special. He was just so energetic, so likeable, a genuine kind of guy. He loved motorcycles and he loved racing. I'll never forget a story that his mom told me. She said Nicky couldn't wait to get home after school and get on his motorcycle and ride on their backyard track. She found out that sometimes he was skipping school to do that, so she had a heart-to-heart talk with him: 'I never want to see you skip school again unless it's something really bad, like you're sick.' He said, 'Okay Mom.' A few days later, she got a call from his teacher: 'Ms. Hayden, I just want to let you know Nicky went home because he had a headache.' Sure enough, Nicky's out back on his minibike, doing laps. I think that shows how committed Nicky was and how much he loved it, from the very beginning. That translated into what we came to see not only as a U.S. Superbike Champion, but a World Champion. Quite a few years ago, I had one of many great talks that I've enjoyed with Earl Hayden over the years, and he told me that as the boys were coming up racing, he told them it was important for them to apply themselves as hard as they could to be the best racers possible, but that wasn't the most important thing in life. The most important thing was to be good people with good hearts and good spirits. And I don't think I've ever seen anyone live that out better than Nicky has. That's just him: a good heart and a good spirit. Everybody loved him. He had a great charm about him and he was the kind of kid that was so special in his talent, but he never let it go to his head."

--Gary Christopher was Senior Manager, Motorcycle Press and Motorcycle Sports when Nicky rode for American Honda. He retired in 2006.

******

"Nicky was the next young-gun—the up-and-coming guy—but what I really remember is that he was a very polite young racer, and you had to respect that. He always had a quiet little smirk on his face, but there were no excuses with Nicky. He'd go out there and get the job done, and if he had a problem, he was pretty good at communicating with Merlyn [Plumlee, his late crew chief]. Those guys made a good team. It's just refreshing when you can work with somebody like Nicky because he's a professional and you knew what you got every time you were at the racetrack. He came to fight. Everyone at American Honda really respects the whole family."

--Ray Plumb was a coordinator for Team Honda during Nicky's AMA career. He is now a District Service Manager based in his home state of Colorado.

******

"With Nicky, I think of a man that has the burn to go motorcycle racing. One thing that stands out was probably in 2000, when we had a test at Willow Springs. He'd stay at my house, and at 4:30 a.m. we'd jump in my wife's car and drive up there. He'd test all day and we'd jump in the car and drive back. Anybody that knows Nick knows that he's a better passenger than a driver. He'd just sit there, and I'd rabbit on to him for hours, burning his eardrums out talking about the sky, motorcycles, whatever. I never took the highway—always all these back roads through fields and stuff. As usual, he had the seat reclined all the way back, and I was kind of beating around the bush about something he should be doing different or something. All of a sudden the seat comes up, and he says, 'You need to understand something right now: I have everything I've got into this, and I've only got one shot. If you see me making one mistake, you've got to tell me right away.' I said, 'All right, I'll do it.' And he laid the seat back down and that was it. That's what kind of guy he is. Every fiber of his being is dedicated to what he wants to achieve."

--Dan Fahie was a mechanic at Team Honda beginning in 1998, by which point he had already been helping the Haydens for a year. He is currently the Senior Racing Manager of Motocross at Kawasaki.

Nicky Hayden World Superbike 1

"It's so great to be around that quality of people. He was so witty, and I genuinely enjoyed my time with him, talking in the team room or whatever. We'd always share information about stuff that worked or didn't work, and there are things you make notes of when you're dicing together. But sometimes people assume too much that guys know what to do off the track, and the PR effect that has on Honda or people in management. You're not just being paid to race the bike; you've also got to represent the company and even yourself a little bit. That doesn't mean you can't have any fun and you just have to be a robot out there, and Nicky definitely didn't miss out on life; he just made sure he had the right people around him. Honestly, Nicky may have already had that down, but maybe I confirmed it for him. He was an awesome person and a world champion, and I'm very proud if I played a small part in that."

--Miguel Duhamel was Nicky's teammate at Team Honda.

******

"Nicky was always an integral part of our racing history, winning 600 and Superbike championships in America before becoming a MotoGP champion. But more than his racing success is just his relationship and how empowering that has been through his career. We were so fortunate to get him back after Ducati, and then growing our relationship into World Superbike has been great for the American Honda family. Our thoughts and wishes and prayers are with his family as they go through this difficult time. He has a great relationship with many companies and that's a tribute to what kind of individual he is. He's probably like one of five that are out there—or that have ever been out there. Many of us have great fond memories, but also great struggles. Obviously the fond ones are when you win a championship and are standing on the podium with him, but the challenges are what it took to get there—the crashes when you're going to the hospital with him. We had a lot of those before he became champion, and like with anyone you go through the thick and thin with, it forms a bond.

--Chuck Miller became Motorcycle Sports Racing Manager beginning in 2001 and was in the role when Nicky won the AMA Superbike title in 2002. He is currently Senior Manager of National Sales.

******

"I was working in the field when Nicky started in Supersport, and it was really the 'Race on Sunday, sell on Monday' thing—all the dealers would be talking about Nicky, and customers were on the floor buying a CBR. Then when he was doing Superbike and the transition into MotoGP, I was here at corporate and saw it from that perspective. You realize it's not just a local thing; he had that same impact everywhere around the world. I remember a dealer trip we had to Japan, and Nicky was going to be riding in MotoGP at Motegi the next day. Our V.P. at that point was pretty tight with Nicky, and asked him, 'Can you surprise the dealers?' You'd think this would be Nicky's last priority in the world at that point, but he went out of his way to come to Tokyo where we were staying and surprise the dealers. And when he does stuff like that, he always does it so naturally. It was never a matter of just showing up for Nicky; he was always present and engaged. So many other people here had deeper relationships with him, but he always made me feel like I knew him, just like he did with everyone else. We brought him up here to the fourth floor for a Q&A after he won the MotoGP championship, and it was like he was in our living room. I see Nicky and I think inspiration, determination, and family. We use that word so much with the Haydens, but it really is a family affair with them, like an extended team. Everybody here is praying for Nicky, and we all have his whole family and his fiancé Jackie in our hearts. There's nobody walking around here for whom that's not the case."

--Chuck Boderman is Vice President, American Honda Motorcycle Division.

ADVMoto recently chatted with Pete Vetrano of Motoman Distibuting, who will be the key importer for the SWM Motorcycles, based in Oak Hills California. Among the full line of dual sports that SWM will offer, the 600cc SuperDual is most exciting for us. Pete tells us that the bike will be available with two different wheel sizes – 19/17 and 21/18 combos. More options include a standard or tall seat, and a factory luggage system that includes auxiliary lighting.

“European dual sport options are great performers but cost a considerable amount of money, and affordable Japanese models utilize dated technology. SWM offers motorcycles that are well equipped for much less than the costs of its competitors.” Pete Vetrano, Motoman Distributing. The SWM Superdual will be available this fall. Although price isn’t officially set, Pete estimates the Superdual to cost around the $8k mark. For more information about this bike or the full line-up of SWM motorcycles, visit MotomanDistributing.com.

About the SWM SuperDual:

With proven performance and specific adventure styling, the highly anticipated SWM SuperDual is set to storm the USA adventure bike market. The SWM SuperDual originated from the Husqvarna TE 630 and was manufactured in Lombadia, Italy, in the same production plant. The highly-acclaimed 600cc liquid-cooled DOHC 4-valve four-stroke engine was extremely popular in its Husqvarna form and is impressing again. The SWM SuperDual now enjoys slightly more horsepower due to the under-slung exhaust configuration. This 600cc engine is the solid foundation upon which this adventure bike was built. The SWM SuperDual's unique adventure design and functionality is bound to attract riders who want an adventure bike that can behave like a dirt bike yet offer the comfort that long distance riding demands.

Ducati Supports Pikes Peak Hill Climb With EMT Motorcycles

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), one of the most extreme road races in the world, has 156 turns for 12.42 miles, up a treacherous mountain peak of 14,115 feet in elevation. First completed in 1916, it’s the second oldest automotive race in the United States. Ducati has secured six victories on the mountain since the company’s debut in 2008 and holds the all-time course record (2012 / Ducati Multistrada 1200 S / 9:52.819).

Today, Ducati North America, official motorcycle sponsor of the PPIHC, announced the expansion of the Race Smart Program to include the race’s first-ever, specially-modified EMT motorcycles to serve as the first line of support on the mountain during the 95th running of historic the “Race to the Clouds.” Two specially-equipped Multistrada 950 EMT motorcycles will be piloted by Dr. Gary Klein, long-time race physician and Safety Team lead for the PPIHC, and Duxton Milam, a 20-year EMT and veteran flight medic with the National Guard. Both also have decades of experience on a motorcycle.

“In the program’s first year, we saw all of the racers who were mentored through the Race Smart Program improve their results and race with confidence up Pikes Peak to the finish,” said Jason Chinnock, CEO of Ducati North America. “For 2017, we saw an opportunity to further enhance the safety of all participants by incorporating moto EMTs for rapid response in the case of a course incident. This is extremely important when the emergency support teams are covering a course of more than 12 miles up a mountain peak.”

Ducati PikesPeak 2

Ducati partnered with the PPIHC in 2016 to create the Race Smart Program, utilizing the experience of former champions to ensure all registered motorcycle entrants, whether rookie or veteran, have the highest level of preparation and knowledge prior to race. The heart of the program is a team of seasoned rider coaches, titled the Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina (PPSA).

For 2017, the PPSA returns with rider coach and all-time PPIHC course record holder, Carlin Dunne mounted on a Multistrada 1200. Paul and Becca Livingston also return as the Race Smart Program team managers, with experience fielding teams at the PPIHC since 2006, including Team Spider Grips Ducati’s 2012 record-setting runs under 10 minutes.

In addition to the two EMT motorcycles and rider coaches, the PPSA has also been expanded to include four-wheeled team coaches. Fred Veitch, veteran PPIHC racer and member of the Board of Directors for the Hill Climb, as well as the Competition, Driver Selection and Appeals committees, will join the PPSA team. He is joined by Jeff MacPherson, who has 50 years of competition experience, including the PPIHC, CART Indycar series, USAC Indianapolis 500, European Formula 3000 Championship, Formula Atlantic in North America, and the Pacific in New Zealand and Australia Formula Super Vee. Join ADVMoto Magazine as we celebrate our 100th edition milestone! The September/October 2017 magazine will feature an outstanding array of storytelling and photography by international riders, with special content from Simon and Lisa Thomas (2RidetheWorld.com) and an editorial on women adventure riders. The edition will also cover a unique, award-winning dual-sport bike build as well as some reader inspired thoughts on the Kawasaki KLR 650 community.

DualSportNews 1996 1999 Issue01From humble beginnings in 1996 as a KLR 650 club newsletter, the magazine has expanded to become the longest-running adventure/ dual-sport motorcycle publication on the market. (Download this issue for free here or by clicking the cover image.)

Although Dual Sport News first took a consistent format in January of 1999, it existed for three years before that as Kawasaki 650 Dual Sport News. In 2010 the current Publisher, Carl Parker, picked up Adventure Motorcycle, rebranded the title as ADVMoto, brought it back to print and became available on over 3,000 newsstands around the world.

"Although the ADV segment may be small for now, we are large in heart and growing rapidly. The upwelling of support and passion in the ADV community is tremendous. There's no doubt more riders will embrace adventure bikes not only for their many practical merits. The community is a diverse spectrum of riders who understands we have one life to live and time is precious. Being accepting and supportive of each other not only makes achieving our goals easier, but enriches us on many personal levels." claims Carl Parker. "It's an honor to work within the ADV world.  The readers and sponsors who have supported us for all these years are second to none. We're doing everything we can to ensure the word 'adventure' stays close to our hearts."

Despite the challenges of growing a family owned, independent media company in a niche market, he says "Seeing happy people is worth it. Seeing people dream, and make dreams come true, is worth it."

Together with the exciting release of our 100th edition, the staff will be at the 2017 AIMExpo (AIMExpoUSA.com) in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 21–24. niterider-adv3600-release

NiteRider—the consensus go-to source for bicycle lighting systems—has entered the powersports category with the ADV 3600 Set, a rugged, powerful, lightweight auxiliary lighting system for adventure bikes.

An ADV-specific product with second-to-none engineering, the ADV 3600 Set comprises a pair of dual-beam CREE™ LED units that emit a combined 7200 lumens, resulting in a massive enhancement in visibility, greatly improving the ride experience on the highway or trail. Venting and cooling fins are incorporated into the heads, and multiple light levels are possible, including high and low beams and a daylight safety flash. Installation is straightforward, with black hard-anodized, machined-aluminum mounts and three plastic shims of varying thicknesses, and the lamps can be aimed in any direction. NiteRider also offers a version with a 1-inch ball for RAM mounting. Each package includes a well-thought-out wiring harness with handlebar-mounted remote switch and gold-plated, military-spec connectors. All cables feature high-quality rubber jackets that remain flexible even in very cold conditions.

Niterider ADV3600 3

While NiteRider may be an unfamiliar brand to some ADV enthusiasts, the brand has earned a stellar reputation for its high-quality auxiliary bicycle lighting, and their new offerings for adventure bikes maintain this no-compromises approach, with U.S. construction and painstaking attention to detail.

This actually marks a return to powersports for NiteRider, whose HID and halogen products were prominently featured in the 2005 Baja 1000 film Dust to Glory before the company focused on its core market during the economic downturn. In the meantime, NiteRider was a pioneer in adapting LED technology to portable-lighting applications. In addition to bicycle and motorcycle lighting, the company offers products for ATVs, off-road automobiles, outdoor use and industrial purposes.

“We’re pleased to reenter the motorcycle segment with a top-shelf adventure product,” said company founder Tom Carroll. “We’ve seen customers adapting our Lumina self-contained bicycle lighting systems to their ADV bikes, so we knew there was a market for a durable lighting system with a low profile and substantial illumination. The reception has been extremely positive, and we look forward to serving the powersports industry for many years to come.”

  • Two dual-beam CREE LED 3,600-lumen headlamps produce a combined 7,200 lumens
  • Rugged, off-road specific design
  • Multiple light-level modes
  • Includes wiring harness, handlebar-mounted remote switch, and mounting hardware
  • Custom reflectors designed for off-road riding
  • Designed, quality-tested, and hand-assembled in San Diego
  • Lifetime warranty.

MSRP: $599.99 NiteRider.com

Yamaha WR250R Cancellation Speculation

yamaha-wr250r-cancellation-speculation

It’s hard to imagine a very successful, modern, small-displacement dual-sport motorcycle, namely the Yamaha WR250R, would get cancelled nine years after its release. Yamaha Motor Company has not sent ADVMoto an official statement clarifying the implications on their Japan website, but the WR250R and WR250X appear to have an impending expiration. Once the dealer stock dries up, WR250Rs might only be available on the used market. On the flip side, it could simply mean the WR250R won't be available in Japan anymore.

Here at ADVMoto, we’re big fans of the WR250R. In 2015 we crossed the entire Trans America Trail on one and had zero bike malfunctions. We’re also currently building a kitted-out WR250R project bike. Not surprisingly, it made our list of the best used 250cc dual-sports

Yamaha WR250RSpeculation will only get us so far, but with high anticipation for Yamaha’s T7 adventure bike we can’t help but wonder if they’re paving the way for a “T3” or other small-displacement bike to compete with the Honda CRF250L Rally, BMW's 310GS, and Kawasaki Versys-X 300 (read the Versys X300 review here). The motor could possibly sourced from Yamaha's R3 - a 321cc parallel twin, a formidable platform that would provide ample "umph" for short highway cruising and keep the bike light enough for easy off-road riding. We'd hope to see some of the WR250R's features carry over, like the stretched service inteverals and quality stock suspension.

What do you think Yamaha is going to do with the WR250R? What kind of small dual-sport would you like to see from them?

By the way, while paging through the Yamaha Japan site we had a good time checking out some of the very cool bikes like the Tricker that never made it to the U.S. It's worth a look!

Kit Kube: The Luggage Organizing System

kit-cube

The typical overland adventurer is attempting to be self-sufficient and prepared for any possible travel scenario. And yet this challenge is at odds with the limited places in which to store equipment and supplies in the vehicle. Adventure motorcycle rider and aerospace engineer Dave Thum saw an opportunity to improve how storage space is utilized and created the Kit Kube system for organizing gear in a vehicle. “The motorcycle is of course the most storage-challenged of all overland travel vehicles so it’s a great proving ground for a storage concept” stated Dave regarding the development process.

This new product is called the Kit Kube - it is similar to the packing cube category of products intended for use in suitcases for ordinary travel. However, unlike a typical generic packing cube the Kit Kube is designed to be used in rugged outdoor environments and inside vehicles driving on extremely rough roads that subject them to abrasion due to vibration. Water, dust, and vibration would destroy a typical packing cube and its contents within weeks or months. The Kit Kube is made from rugged 600 Denier Poly fabric and thick, highquality PVC. The transparent PVC panel on the top of the cube will allow users to see the contents of each cube thereby simplifying the search for the item they are looking for. The Kit Kube is flexible and can be overstuffed or flow around anomalies in the storage space if necessary (unlike a hard case).

KitCube2

Storage spaces in overland vehicles tend to be small and lack uniformity. Some spaces are not very accessible but are great for storing gear that may only be used in an emergency (assuming that space is accessible during the emergency). Larger spaces need to be subdivided to maintain packing efficiency and utility. Alan Feld, president of Sportsmobile West, said of the Kit Kube concept “The thing about vans, is that the walls and interiors of the cabinets are not square due to the egg shape of the exterior walls of the chassis. So if our interior cabinets are 14" at the mid-line, could be 6" at the top, and I think that is a good reason to have soft-sided storage, as it can "mold" to the space : should be a great fit for a Sportsmobile”.

The first three sizes for the Kit Kubes are:

  • Small: 6.5” L x 6.5” W x 3.25” H (2.25 liter) $9.95
  • Medium: 13” L x 6.5” W x 3.25” H (4.5 liter) $14.95
  • Large: 13” L x 13” W x 3.25” H (9.0 liter) $19.95

About Overland Adventurer Designs:

Overland Adventurer Designs is a start-up company born out of the unswerving curiosity that is inherent in all overland adventurers. The company will seek to design or locate best-in-class products and strategies for optimizing the overland travel experience. Excellent quality and performance are essential as reliability is paramount for distant travels far from product support and repair. We like solving problems and love to listen to customers to determine unmet needs in their travel experiences.

Giving back:

Owner Dave Thum is a long-term Rotarian and embraces giving back to the community. “Each year we will choose a cause that relates to the community of overland travelers and donate 10% of our profits to that cause”. In its first year of business the recipient of this donation will be the nonprofit ConserVentures. Roseann & Jonathan Hanson founded ConserVentures in 2010 and states its purpose as “We promote conservation through exploration. Exploration leads to personal connections, personal connections lead to awareness, and awareness leads to action, face-toface. ConserVentures helps make that happen”. Overland-Adventurer.com

Yamaha T7 (MT-07) Adventure Spy Shots

Published in: News

yamaha-mt-07-adventure-spy-shots

Yamaha appears to be testing a new MT-07/FZ-07 adventure bike similar to the hotly anticipated mid-weight T7 concept. Yamaha won the first few Paris-Dakar Rallies, and later had great success in the 1990s with their YZE850T twin-cylinder race bikes, so they know how to make these platforms work.  New images recently surfaced from MCN showing what looks to be a slightly more pedestrian version of the T7 concept which got everyone excited.

Taking from the well-liked and affordable MT-07/FZ-07 engine design, this is not just a street bike with spoked wheels and higher ground clearance. We can see modern, inverted forks, dual front brake disks with ABS, off-road-ready 21" and 18" wheels, and room for a passenger on the seat. Space for luggage, removable rubber inserts in the footpegs and a sleek, low fender all point to adventure touring readiness. The tail section and other components look almost ready for production, on schedule with the other new mid-weight adventure models.

Yamaha MT07 Spy 2

We're hoping to see a competitively large fuel tank, a rally-inspired fairing and appropriately adjustable suspension. The 689cc parallel-twin engine will work well in an adventure bike, and if it gets switchable electronic aids and quality suspension, there's reason to believe this will be a success.

While the bike in these spy shots isn't as much of a rally bike as the exciting T7 concept, it should still be highly competitive in this booming market. BMW will have their new F850GS, KTM have been working on a 790 Adventure, and Triumph have had success with their Tiger 800XC. The potential is here for Yamaha to offer a very competitive mid-sized, twin-cylinder adventure bike at an affordable price.

Spidi Sneak Peek of Honda's Africa Twin Rally

honda-africa-twin-crf1000l-rally

As soon as the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin was released, concepts and speculation began about a possible Africa Twin Rally model as well. Spidi provides Honda Powersports with technical apparel, so it was a perfect fit for a Spidi test rider to take the Africa Twin Rally for a multi-day ride while testing some new clothing for their adventure touring collection.

Spidi's test rider reported a more powerful, nimble riding experience across everything from singletrack to sand and ruts. While it's still under development, the high fender, trimmed styling, and rally-tower-like instrument cluster gives the Rally a more aggressive look. If Honda follows their own path of the CRF250L and the new CRF250L Rally, we may see the big-bike version soon.

SPIDI AfricaTwin Rally 4

While technical data is limited, we do know that suspension is more dirt-oriented, the 21/18" wheels are more durable, and the Termignoni exhaust adds five horsepower. Weight savings total around 15 pounds thanks to carbon fiber parts.

This isn't an official production bike yet, but we can hope the Africa Twin Rally will grace showroom floors in the not-too-distant future. Is this the return of the super-bore enduro bikes like the BMW HP2 and KTM 950 Super Enduro R?

The Backcountry Discovery Routes organization announces it’s summer fundraising campaign that guarantees to double the impact by matching all contributions dollar for dollar. This means a donation of $100 will result in $200 being invested in the activities of the non-profit organization whose mission is to create one new cross-state route per year for the adventure and dual-sport motorcycles. It also seeks to preserve riding opportunities and access to public lands through cooperation with land managers, and creating sustainable motorcycle tourism in small town communities along the BDR routes.

“Keeping the gas station alive in these tiny towns is a critical element to preserving access to remote backcountry riding areas. Having local communities that rely on motorcycle tourism gives us a bigger voice to keep these remote roads open for exploring on motorcycles.” - Paul Guillien, BDR Board President.

BDRFundraiser

Riding areas have been under tremendous threat in recent years and few organizations have delivered success in the way Backcountry Discovery Routes by creating and preserving riding opportunities for adventure motorcycles. The goal of the ‘Double Your Impact’ July fundraising campaign is to raise funds necessary to continue development of the next two BDR projects. If fundraising goals are met, the organization expects to publish the Mid Atlantic BDR and California BDR-South, in the next two years.

If you want to make a difference and double your impact, go to RideBDR.com and make a contribution today. The matching grant was created with private contributions from individuals who attended the organization’s Mojave Desert Ride Fundraiser earlier this year.

Backcountry Discovery Routes is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization whose mission is to establish and preserve off-highway routes for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. Through education, advocacy, and promotion of responsible motorcycle travel, BDR seeks to preserve backcountry motorcycling opportunities for generations to come.
